Facilities at SanAquam Ayurvedic Spa Retreat, DrakensbergWe currently have a Lodge Retreat where guests can experience the benefits of SanAquam’s integrated approach to wellness and nature. It currently accommodates 10 people and have 4 spa rooms, a boma and braai area  and swimming pool. We will be buiding additional suites , spa rooms and meeting rooms in the 2nd half of 2011. Located  in the foothills of the Cathkin Mountains at over 3300 metres, the 723 hectare property has a 4000 year old san cave with san paintings ,three waterfalls and 7 streams to help and uninterrupted views of Cathkin and Champagne you unwind and get back to nature’s rhythm.

outdoor activities

  • Activities at SanAquam Ayurvedic Spa Retreat, DrakensbergVisit the Buys Grot which is a 4000 year old san cave on the property with san paintings and  a waterfall flowing over it. It is only 400 meters from the Retreat which makes this so accessible.  Relax and read a book at the cave or just unwind in this sacred space.
  • Hike to one of the three waterfalls at the Retreat and enjoy the refreshing waterfall or a splash in the pool below (2 hours) in the afternoon.
  • Sit in the Boma at the Retreat and enjoy uninterrupted views of the Cathkin Mountains, the Little Berg and the SanAquam Valley while enjoying a refreshing drink or a social braai.
  • Enjoy a horse-ride in the SanAquam valley or up one of our mountains and ride on its peak with stunning views of Bell Park Dam. Or choose a simpler 1 hour horse-ride for those novices out there.
  • Enjoy a sunset 4 x 4 drive on the SanAquam property , climbing the contours until you reach the top and have a close-up uninterrupted view of the Cathkin Peak and Champagne Castle while you enjoy the sunset with some drinks and snacks (2.5 hours – weather permitting) .
  • Choose to ride from 1200m to 1600m on top with uninterrupted views of Cathkin mountains or a ride in the valley crossing 4 streams and waterfalls. It is quite an exhilarating experience.
  • Some sport including badmington, volleyball and social cricket
  • Visit the organic garden  with some tips on organic gardening.

ValleyIn the Champagne Valley (within a 10-15km radius), there are three 4 star Resorts including Drakensberg Sun Hotel (which has a dam and boating facilities), Champagne Sports Resorts (a top 20 Golf Resort in South Africa), and Champagne Castle (which ajoins the Monks Cowl Nature Reserve and is wonderful place to have a afternoon drink while watching the sunset on Cathkin Peak. Monks Cowl Nature Reserve is a 20minute drive from SanAquam if one wanted to go for long hikes or overnight hikes. For the more adventurous there is Drakensberg Canopy Tours (tree slides) , Four Rivers (quadbiking, river rafting and other paintball) and Champagne Castle adventures (abseiling, fufi slide etc) and some other options. If you would like to learn about falcons and other exotic birds, there is a bird show at Falcon Ridge every morning at 10h30. For the art and craft lovers , there is Ardmore Pottery (which is world famous) nearby candle and rug factories and other cottage industries that are worth visiting. For music lovers, Drakensberg Choir have shows on Wednesday nights and have music festivals in the year which are just amazing.

So you would be spoilt for choice at SanAquam or in the Valley and 7 days will be ideal to help you get back to balance and enjoy some of the outdoor options at SanAquam and in the Champagne Valley area.
